- Looking for Karla Kohlhoff - bethie Sat 08/30/2003
Hello! I am seeking information on a cousin that I have only met once in my life. Her name is Karla, and I know that she married, so I am not certain what her last name is now. Her father is Ernest Kohlhoff and he lives in Oregon. Her paternal grandmother is Johanna Kohlhoff, possibly deceased, last contact with theis family was in 1995. She has a step-brother named Allan. I believe Karla had a set of twins after her marriage, and I believe she left Oregon in 1983 or thereabout, and possibly moved to Oaklahoma. I would love to hear from her or her children. If you think you can help please email me at paraffinangels@yahoo.comThanks

- August's sister, Bertha - oldjoe Thu 08/29/2002
Bertha Kohlhoff Benz died Jan, 9, 1896 in Shaoktan Township, Lincoln County, Minnesotaaged 39 years, 6 Months,4 days. Her parents were Fredrich and Fredricka Kohlhoff and she was born in Germany. So states her death certificate on file in the county court house. She and her husband, Eduard August Benz had seven surviving children, Anna, Hulda, Minna, Maria (Mary?), Hedwig, Arthur, and Emil. The postoffice was New Grove since the town of Hendricks didn't come into existance until the summer of 1900 when the railroad spur was built from Tyler, Mn. to Astoria, S.D. New Grove consisted of a postoffice, School, and church. The postoffice closed after Hendricks came into being. My grandmother, Minna (see above) claimed that her father and many of the men from the Pommeranian settlement in Door County came to western Minnesota in approx. 1888, when she was nine, and marked out their homestead claims during the summer, then returned to Wisc. to order lumber, etc. to build their homes, returning to Minnestoa with their families to settle the following spring. The Hendricks Centenial Book (2000) contains a photo captioned "the Kohlhoff Brothers" showing two of the boys with bicyles. There are also copies of some of the school records from New Grove listing the Kohlhoff children in that school <the school has been closed since 1955, I was among the last students to attend>. My grandmother and Aunt Myrta often visited "Uncle Kohlhoff" in Chico as well as the rest of the family. My aunt made her last trip in 1976, just prior to her death. By 1918, the county plat map of Lincoln County showes no Kohlhoffs in the county, this being the year of my father's birth. I was always told that one of the families which accompanied the Kohlhoff west was the Gackstetter's.

- August Frederick Kohlhoff - Fred Kohlhoff Fri 08/09/2002
The following information was obtained from various network sites, personal Information, and family oral history. My grand-father, AUGUST FREDERICK KOHLHOFF, was born 05/07/l852in Greifenberg Kries, Pomerania, Germany. He died in Chico, Butte County, CAon 12/22/1940. He and his family were farmers. Pomerania is in the Northeasternportion of Germany covering both sides of the Oder River. The Oder River is the border between Germany and Poland. My cousins living North of Chico have German documents that indicate that when his family immigrated to the US he had to staybehind in Germany to complete his military service. This could have been about the time of the War of 1870. He never served on active duty as he was placed inthe reserves due to an ailment. The documents indicate that he lived in Stettin, Germany (Now Szczein, Poland). After WW II Russian took part of Eastern Poland. To compensate for this taking, Poland was given part of Eastern Germany up to the\Oder River. However, the border swings to the West bank of the Oder just beforeit reaches the Baltic Sea. This was to insure that Poland could take the major seaport of Stettin (Szczein). I cannot find when or where they entered the US as the Ellis Island web site covers entrants from 1892 and the Kohlhoffs arrived earlier thanthat year. My Uncle Ruben in Chico told me that they initially settled in Sisters City,Wisc. It is located on Door Peninsula of Eastern Wisc. August was a short, thin person and he could speak, read and write English, he spoke with a strong Germanaccent . He was a major factor in the Lutheran Church. Hard working, he was cutting alfalfa with a hand-scythe and chopping it into chicken food a week beforehe died. While in Hendricks, Minn. a doctor recommended that he take his wife,Wilhelmina, to a warmer climate. He contacted a preacher that was in California, asking him to find him some farmland. When the preacher advised him that hehad found a Section of land North of Chico that was good land, August bought itsight unseen. In those days you could trust preachers. He moved out with his wifeand younger children in the early days of the 20th Century, leaving the two oldest boys to settle matters at the farm there and to join them later. The old California homestead is still on H/W 99E about 10 miles North of Chico. The Section was separated by H/W 99E with the home, chicken barns, and alfalfa fields on the West side and the barns and fields on the East side. He donated from land to the local school board so they would erect a one-room school near the home. A Butte County fire station now occupies the land. The land was farmed mainly in wheat and almonds. They also raised chicken and eggs for sell, plus a couple of milk cows. When August retired he portioned out the land to the three boys that had stayed on the farm. Ruben, the youngest, got the old homestead, while the other two build houses at opposite corners of the property. They would get together and build homes, barns, etc., and to work the land. They had an almond huller that was used to hull (removed the hulls) of their own almonds and those of their neighbors. After the death of August and as the boys grew older, retired, and moved, the land and buildings were sold off. So there are no Kohlhoffs located at the old homestead. My cousins live in small towns North of Chico. Grandmother, WIHELMINA KOHLHOFF (Nee: Hoffman) married August at Liberty Grove Twp (township?), Door, Wisc. About 1879. I have not been able to find out when or where she was born nor exactly when she died. I do know that it was at the old homestead in Chico about 1929 or 2930. She had 8 children, 6 boys and 2 girls. She was also short and thin. My mother marveled that she was so thin after having 8 children. Her waist could be encircled with just my mother ‘s two hands. She barely learned to speak English and German was spoken in the home. Going on the basis of her children’s birthplaces, we know the family moved from the Sisters Bay, Wisc. area to Hendricks, Minn to Chico, CA. The eight children were:EMIL HEINRICH FRIEDRICH KOHLHOFF was christened July 19, 1880 at Liberty Grove Twp, Door, WI. I do not know the exact date of birth, but he was the oldest child. He never married nor had any children that we knew of. I do not believe that he came out to California to join the family. He was a chemist. The family lost contact with him for many years, showing up at his brother, Fredrick’s, house in Oakland, CA about 1936. I know he spent some time in Puerto Rico. Like all the boys except for Ruben he was tall and slender. He had a full head of hair, unlike the rest of the boys. He died in Oakland, CA some time around 1937, about the age of 56.PAUL FREDERICK KOHLHOFF was born 03/14/1882. He died on 01/07/1958 in Chico, CA, age 76. He married late in life to a woman named OLLIE. She had two older children, a boy and a girl. I do not know their names, but the boy was nicknamed “Strawdump” as when they were harvesting wheat his job was to dump the straw when the hamper on the harvester got full. Paul and Ollie never had children of their own. His home was on the Northeast corner of the property. He plated the violin and the clarinet. With his brothers Herman (trumpet) and Frederick (Slide Trombone) they formed a band (Knights of Gladness) and would play at local dances.BERTHA KOHLHOFF. I not know much about her. She married and moved away to Klamath Falls, OR. and had at least one child, Paulene.ARTHUR ALBERT FREDERICK KOHLHOFF was born Oct 27, 1885. Christened at Liberty Grove, Door County, Wisc. He died at Chico, CA Nov 1, 1969, age 84. He also married late in life to LOTTIE, who had adult children by a previous marriage. They also did not have children of their own. His home was on the Southeast corner of the Section. Art also played the clarinet.HERMAN FREDERICK KOHLHOFF was born Aug 4, 1888, in MN, and died Dec 31, 1948 in Berkeley, Alameda County, CA, age 60. He married a Hungarian immigrant named MARY. She had a small nursery behind their home in Berkeley growing mainly ferns and fuchsias. Herman had a small wine press and made some of his own wine. I do not know when he left the farm nor what he did for a living. He also married late and never had any children. He played the violin, trumpet and piano.ANNA A PROBST (Nee: KOHLHOFF) was born Jan 15, 1891 in Wisc. and died in Chico, CA Feb 26, 1977, age 85. She lived in the city of Chico itself. Her husband, CHARLES (CHARLIE) PROBST worked for the Diamond Farms and lived there during the week, coming home to Chico on the weekends. They never had any children. She was short like her mother, but a little plump. She played the organ. Her mind was a clear as a bell until the last. Sweet disposition and was active in the local Luther Church. FREDERICK WILLIAM KOHLHOFF, my father, was born Oct 18, 1896 at Hendricks, MN and died in Oakland, CA Apr 8, 1949, age 53. He married VIOLA BATCHELDER in 1926 in Oakland, CA and honeymooned at Paradise, CA near Chico, CA. They had three children, FREDERICK HERMAN born April 11, 1927, ARTHUR AUGUST born March 15, 1929 and PATRICIA ANNA born January 9, 1933. FREDERICK H and ARTHUR A are still alive. PATRICIA A died in January 1987 in Las Vegas, NV.Frederick W. was the first of the Kohlhoff boys to marry and my have married before his sisters. As none of the other boys had sons of their own, only ERIK, son of FREDERICK W., born Feb 20, 1954, and the sons of Arthur A, Arthur Jr, Paul, and Carl are left to carry on the KOHLHOFF name on this line of the family. Frederick W. left the farm some time before WW I. I know that he was drafted into the Army at the latter part of the war, but never was sent overseas. He got a job offer in the San Francisco area and so was able to get out of the Army as soon as WW I was over. He worked as a deckhand for Key System Ferry until the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge was built. He played the violin and the slide-trombone. He studied and earned his master’s license for light pleasure boats. RUBEN KOHLHOFF was born Jul 18, 1900 in MN, died in Chico Jan 17, 1998, age 97. He was one of the boys that stayed on the farm. It is interesting to note how much longer the boys lived that stayed on the farm compared to those that left. He was the shortest of the boys. Slender, jovial, and hard working, he was a deacon and treasurer at times for the local Lutheran Church. He married CORA who he met when she was the nurse taking care of his mother during her last days. They had no boys, but four girls; ELOISE, JOANNE, LOIS and CAROL. The first three live just North of Chico and Carol lives just over the California border in Oregon. Side notes from the Internet:AUGUST KOHLHOFF who registered as August COLLLOFF in Brown County, SD, 1870-1880, possibly trace back to Pomerania. An AUGUST KOHLHOFF was listed as a pioneer in Brown County, SC in 1879. Also listed were four Kohlhoffs – Minnie, Lydia, Laura and A. Kohlhoff. (Now Hendricks MN is right on the SD and MN border. I do not know if there is any connection with or family or not, but I do remember my father talking about his Aunt Minnie. If anyone can give me more information on AUGUST or WILHELMINA, I would appreciate it.

- Susan Christina Kohlhoff - Desert Rose Sun 04/21/2002
I have been researching my great-grandmother, Susan Christina Kohlhoff (also spelled on Marriage Certificate as Kollkoff). This seems to be a very elusive family to trace. Susan was born 1 March 1868 either on board ship coming to America or in America but I have never been able to locate a birth record. She married Albert Charles Steimel 25 Feb 1886 in Cape Girardeau Co., MO. Her mother was Mary Ann Freese or Friese. Mary Ann was an emigrant to this country. The father of Susan, Fritzi Kohlhoff, died on the voyage over and was buried at sea. My grandmother told me that her grandmother related to her that they had lived within the sight of the windmills in Holland.I have traced the Mary Ann and her daughter to Indiana where Mary Ann married a John Frederick Koehler. Later they came to Missouri. I have recently received a number of photographs of the Kohlhoff family in Indiana but there aren't any names to go with the pictures. Does anyone have any information on this line?
